Nigel Farage's Ukip has climbed to record popularity and is no longer seen as “a wasted vote” following its triumph at Clacton, an exclusive poll reveals today.
In a new breakthrough for the anti-EU party, it appears to have overcome the claim made by rivals that there is no point backing such a small party.
For the first time, more people now reject the taunt, research by Ipsos MORI discloses.
In May, the proportion of people who thought the economy would improve in the year ahead was 35 percentage points higher than the proportion who thought things would get worse. Now, it is just 12 points higher.
At the same time, Ukip’s popularity has climbed to a record 16 per cent in the monthly Ipsos MORI survey published in tonight’s Evening Standard. It is up one point since September, following a two-point rise the previous month.

Left-wing commentators have shown more outrage over the Ukip Calypso song than the grooming and rape of thousands of girls in northern England, Nigel Farage has said.
The UK Independence Party leader made the controversial claim during a robust defence of a record about his party, which has faced criticism for being racist.
Mike Reid, a former radio DJ, recently pulled the song - which was sung in a faux-Jamaican accent and made reference to immigration - after it triggered a backlash.
Speaking on LBC Radio, Mr Farage defended Mr Reid's song, which he urged Ukip supporters to buy, and rejected suggestions it was insensitive.
"Had he done this is any other context than Ukip, there wouldn't be a row at all. But because it's Ukip people will scream blue murder," Mr Farage said.
"And I tell you what gets me. We've had more condemnation and outrage from Left-wing commentators about Mike Reid's Calypso than we've had over the grooming and rape of thousands of young girls in the north of England."

THE BBC has confirmed the hand-picked audience for last night’s election debate WAS left-leaning – though Nigel Farage was booed for pointing this out.

THE BBC has confirmed the hand-picked audience for last night’s election debate WAS left-leaning – though Nigel Farage was booed for pointing this out. I read this in the Express, it just goes to show how biased the BBC really is, I suppose they are thinking of losing the c£1000,000 the EU gives them every year if we come out of the EU.

and when ukip pointed this out it did not go down to well
I think he was right to point it out if not no one would have known but I see some are criticizing him for pointing this out
that leaves me to believe they just do not like the truth and I believe what ukip is saying is the truth

I didn't see the programme, but from what I hear the BBC packed the audience with those of leftish viewpoint knowing full well that Nigel Farage would be shouted down. It's no wonder the man tried to defend his position and accused the BBC of packing the audience. In my opinion the BBC should be ashamed of itself.

The thing is, the BBC are probably used to politicians not answering questions and evading the issue at hand, so the experience of a politician answering a question is probably new to them.
