Yet for all the comfort they give their owners, those fireside cuddles are far from a :Dtreat for the family moggie.
The country’s leading cat charity says too many owners are letting their love for their pets cloud their judgment when it comes to providing a stress-free home.
Cats Protection carried out a survey of the nation’s cat owners to find out what they know about caring for their pets. The charity found more than half are unaware of the stress being mollycoddled can give their cat.
“Being held or stroked for too long can be very stressful for some cats,” said Cats Protection behaviour manager Nicky Trevorrow.
“Space and peace is often what they need. They are not small furry humans, so what would comfort us will not necessarily comfort them. Owners love their animals and want them to be happy but our research has highlighted a lack of understanding.”
Cats Protection conducted the survey for a BBC2 Horizon documentary, Cat Watch 2014, about the secret lives of cats, which will be screened on Tuesday.
Film makers tracked 100 animals in Brighton using GPS and micro-cameras to examine the transition from pampered pets to predators, how 21st century life is changing their solitary nature and how they are learning new ways to communicate with each other and humans.
However, the survey shows owners still have a lot to learn about them. It revealed 55 per cent did not realise living with another cat or dog can be stressful.
