Never used any of the coffee bars in Handsworth, though I used quite a few in Balsall Heath, a couple in Nechells, some in the City Centre. Of course the same as most people of my age I occasionally used The Last Chance Aston, Smokey Joes Northfield and The Tow Rope on Broad Street.

These are some of the coffee bars in and near to the city centre that I used throughout 60's, I'm sure that anybody that was out and about in the 60's would have known all three of these coffee houses

Another all night café that I used in the mid 60's was The Rendezvous just down from the Tow Tope, it wasn't as popular as the Tow Rope so therefore it was a little quieter and less rowdy if you just wanted a quiet cup of coffee. Attachments:

The Last Chance Transport Café one of the few all night cafes in Birmingham this one was at he junction of Waterworks Rd & Lichfield originally Joyce's Café it changed it's name c1969 to He Last Chance I suppose in anticipation of the new Gravelly Hill Interchange at Junction 6 of the M6 motorway that became known to all as Spaghetti Junction.

Anybody remember this one, La Boheme on Aston Street in Gosta Green opposite the central fire station. Opened in 1958 by Andre Drucker who later opened several Patisserie shops and now the company has shops all over the UK.

In the 50's & 60's in the city centre there was the Kardomah Cafe's one on Colmore Row at the entrance of the Great Western Arcade and the other in New Street at the junction of Needless Alley. Not that these cafés were part of the swinging 60's scene but more a part of the establishment and were a regular meeting place and resting place for those out for a days shopping.

Smokey Joes & the Bonanza Cafes on Bristol Road Northfield that disappeared in the early to middle 60's so that they could build the Northfield Shopping Centre. Two very poor photos as with all the photos, please click on them to enlarge them for better viewing.

Not a coffee bar a such, but I'm sure that most people living on the south side of Birmingham have used this facility in Cannon Hill Park at sometime or other. Though personally I have to say that it's my opinion that in recent years the standard of catering and service has dropped considerably.

Not really a coffee house at such, but it was just as popular any any café in the town especially after the pubs closed at night. Alex's Pie stand has many locarions around the Hill street and Hinkley street area moving as changes in the city structures and streets required it finally ending up at the junction of Hill Street and Hinkley Street at the rear of the Crown Hotel becoming a well used venue of the biker fraternity also used by many of the City's bands after completing their nights gig at a local pub or club.

Do you remember this place, Zorbas on Warwick Road Acocks Green though was it on Warwick Rd or Olton Boulevard East, I really wouldn't like to say. I have to be honest I never used it when it was a restaurant and only ever visited the Boundary Club which is what it was previously a couple of times. After closing as Zorbas it opened as a bar for a short while then closed for a while then reopened as Zorbas again but it wasn't long before it closed down again.

Anybody remember this place El Sombrero on The Horsefair on the late 50's & early 60's. Myself I as far as I can remember I don't think I ever used it, but I was aware of it. I probably thought of it as not my type of hang out. Attachments:

Another restaurant that started out as a café though many years before that it was a public house (the Golden Horse). I might have used it once or twice when it was Ledos Café when I worked locally in the 60's but I never frequented it when it was Los Canarios Attachments:

Did you ever get in here, Pattisons on the corner of Corporation Street and Fore Street. The first floor self service restaurant was a great place to meet up with friends befote a night out. It was cheap and it stopped open until late unlike some of the other cheaper places.
