I probably thought of it as not my type of hang out. hi adam I used the el sombrero just a few times it was used by what was known has teddy boys not my cup of coffee you might say but it was ok

I think my main reason for not using the Sombrero was that at the time I was living on the other side of the City and to get there I would have had to pass many of my usual haunts where my mates were.

Another café that I passed many times taking a short cut up or down New Meeting street was the Beefie Café probably known better by the name it changed to in the mid 60's The Stage Door. Anybody know why the Stage Door I don't think there was a theatre anywhere nearby except the News Theatre on the High Street and I don't think they ever did live acts there did they?

I probably thought of it as not my type of hang out. went to el sombrero and la fiesta around a Christmas late 50s but didn't stay for a coffee in either - in the former a greek? type bloke asked me why I was going - replied I didn't like it. He asked why - I just said lighting was bad and kept walking. The sum of my worldwide coffee bar experience.

Yes lighting in coffee houses in the 50's tended to be subdued I suppose, if you asked they would say that it added to the ambience of the establishment, but I tend to think in most places it was just to disguise the poor quality of the decoration and fitting out of some of these places. I certainly found that to be true of some of the nightclubs when working in them during daylight hours.

Another meeting place that a few of the older generation among us will recognise from the late 50's the Milk Bar that stood where the Rotunda now stands

Not What you would call a coffee bar, more a greasy spoon type cafe. No juke box or pinball machines in here just good food and one of the best pork & stuffing sandwiches to be had anywhere. The Waverley Cafe located at the top of Oldknow Road opposite the Labour Exchange (sorry Jobcentre) giving my age away there.

Another greasy spoon cafe that I always found worth a visit on my travels was the Cateswell Cafe on Stratford Road opposite Hall Green Station. Attachments:
