Three weeks’ worth of rain in one day made it the wettest August bank holiday since the 1980s, forecasters said.
And with a soaking week to come, made worse by 45mph gales, it added up to a grim end to summer.
London suffered its coldest August bank holiday on record with temperatures peaking at 17C, 6C below normal.
Forecaster Brian Gaze of The Weather Outlook said: “With heavy rain across much of the country it was possibly the worst August bank holiday Monday since 1986.”
